• The following are examples of the equivalent forms of decimals and fractions:

0.1

= 1/10

0.01

= 1/100

0.001

= 1/1,000

0.0001

= 1/10,000

0.00001

= 1/100,000

• Decimals have equivalent forms as fractions. For example, the decimal 0.5 is equal to the fraction 5/10. This can be proven by dividing the fraction 5/10 or 5 ÷ 10.

Using the long division format:

Insert the decimal point and a zero in the tenth position.

10 divides into 5.0, 0.5 times, then multiply 10 × 0.5 = 5.0
